I've been going through Kindles with every new release of the hardware. So far it was a limited experience for the lack of wireless outside the US and for the lack of anything WiFi. So I had to download the books via USB.
Guess how happy I was when Amazon announced their "International Kindle" that could also do GSM for the "Whispernet" service, what Amazon calls it. Today the Kindle arrived and it actually worked, "Whispernet" is active in Germany, different from my other Kindles where it only works when in the US.
But nothing was delivered wirelessly - until I found out that I have to pay a weekly fee of $4.99 for having the subscriptions delivered "internationally" (Update 20091107: Not when you switch the country in the Manage your Kindle settings) and another $1.99 per download from my library. Now how "International Kindle" is that. Click on the picture to read the original description on the device.
Also I still can not get the iPhone Kindle app from my German iTunes store account - it's only available to US customers.
Jeff, this is cheap, really cheap! Go get a deal with the local carriers and please make the Kindle App available to all.
