It's been a while since the latest Mac and iPhone update. Here is a brief summary: You can currently buy any 8 or 16GB iPhone and make it work for your carrier without signing a proprietary new contract with anybody. Here is how it works:

1. Buy one (in the U.S. if possible because the Apple $/EUR exchange rate is 1/1 whereas the rest of the world currently does 1.56/1 - so a U.S. 16 GB ifon is 370EUR incl. taxes compared to 500 in Europe)
2. Go to http://www.Ziphone.org and Download the application for your platform (Windows or Mac)
3. On Windows, install iTunes of you haven't done so yet. Connect your iPhone to the PC/Mac. Plug in the ifon.
4. Install and Run Ziphone, Click the "Do it all" and "Go" buttons, wait for 4 minutes while watching you iPhone in awe.
5. Get a paper-clip to remove the SIM tray from the iPhone, put in yours

You are done. Once done playing check the Installer application that's now on your iPhone.

If you are lucky enough to be a German T-Mobile customer with a non-iPhone plan you have to add an entry to the carrier.plist file to allow for editing the EGDE settings of your fon. Details can be found here. Do that:

1.1.3 made easy

There is a new unlocking tool out there for OOTB (out of the box) 1.1.3 and 1.1.2 iPhones. It is dead easy and it worked like a charm on my 1.1.3 iPhone that had already been jailbroken before. It consists of a package you can simply install. To do so s.apfelphone.net needs to be added to the sources for Installer. Details can be found at apfelphone.net.

What is this? Navigating, searching and following threads is a really painful thing to do. It causes stupid questions to spam the boards and puts loads on the server, not mentioning all the time that is lost in useless discussions. Das ist mal eine lustige Methode, das iPhone zu Hacken, Einbruch per Emergency-Call und dann in-call Funktionalitäten. Schlau, nur, wie findet man sowas raus?

Der Unlock Vorgang war dafür aber wirklich recht komfortabel, auch wenn die Anleitung nicht mehr ganz zur aktuellen Version des Installers passt. Dieser Installiert ein Paket (Communities Sources) bereits mit - und das sucht man dann erstmal vergeblich im Repository.

Und ich musste eine andere SIM nehmen - da sich Vodafone Karten nicht dazu überreden lassen, die PIN Abfrage abzuschalten. :-) Aber alles in allem "a walk in the park".... :-)

Unter Settings->General->Network->EDGE können der Access Point Name (APN) und der Benutzername/Passwort des Carriers eingestellt werden. Dies ist notwendig, um auch ohne WLAN die Internet-basierten Dinge über GPRS und EDGE tun zu können.

Ich werde hier keine Schritt für Schritt Anleitung geben, denn da gibt es genug, aber ich werde eine Etage darüber den Leitfaden geben, wann man wo welche Anleitung befolgen muss. Englisch muss man können, mein Glossar gelesen haben, und seinen Computer einigermaßen bedienen können.
