It's always inspiring to talk to Greg Papadopoulos, CTO of Sun. Matt Asays email conversation with him and a very interesting Webex session we at Open-Xchange had with him a couple of weeks ago seem to have lead to the same thoughts, with somewhat different results. As our CTO, Gecko, puts it, the approach to the Open Cloud must be grass-roots, just as this whole Open Source thing was.
The battlefield is the Cloud architectures. Data is part of that. Data comes from applications - to build the Open Cloud and prevent data lock-in, applications need to qualify to some openess-criteria (slide 18).
If you want more on my musings check out the attached presentation that I have recently been using at the Open Source Meets Business and at the Parallels Conferences.
Oh, and yeah - I believe Sun is in a great position to build the first real "Open Cloud" offering...
